Sometimes it’s necessary to upload files to your cPanel account. This can be easily accomplished by using the File Manager within your cPanel account. If you are unfamiliar with File Manager in cPanel, please see our article on Using File Manager in cPanel.

In this example, we’re going to upload a test.html file to the public_html folder in File Manager. So when you visit the file through a web browser, you’d go to example.com/test.html. Uploading a File using the cPanel File Manager

  1. Log into cPanel.
  2. On the home screen under the files section choose “File Manager“.
  3. Click the Settings icon in your File Manager window.
  4. Next, choose where you’d like to start in. For this example, we’re going to use the Web Root option – which is the public_html folder. Since we’re uploading to the public_html folder we do not need to navigate anywhere else.
  5. Select “Upload” from the icons at the top.
  6. Navigate to the file you want to upload on your local computer by selecting the “Choose File” button.
  7. Select the file and click “Open“. Once the file is finished uploading you can click on the link in the cetner of the screen to retrun to the folder you uploaded the file to.
  8. Now, in a web browser, we can visit the file and verify it uploaded to the location correctly.

Using the File Manager in cPanel

  1. Click on the “File Manager” in the “Files” section.

    You will then see your files listed. If you need to access a hidden file (such as .htaccess), it is covered in our guide on how to show hidden files.

Now that you are logged into file manager, let’s take a few minutes to understand some of the basic features of File Manager.

  • Task Bar (Purple Outline)– This is where you can perform basic tasks like create a new folder, delete a file, edit a file and much more.
  • Current Location (Orange Outline)– This tells you where you currently located. Also you can specify a path here to navigate to somewhere else.
  • File Tree (Red Outline) – This is also for navigation, but shows you a visual representation of how your files are structured.
  • Current Folder Contents (Green Outline) – This lets you know what the contents are of the current folder you are in.
