Development

Hello Everyone,
I still cant make my apache run. This is the
error i get...
I actually miss xampp 1.7.7!!! 1.8.1 is more
advanced which means more complicated...

Error: Apache shutdown
unexpectedly.
This may be due to a blocked port, missing
dependencies, improper privileges, a crash, or a shutdown by another
method.Check the '/xampp/apache/logs/error.log' file and the Windows
Event Viewer for more clues

I'm new to Ubuntu but I'm trying to set up my web development
environment on this machine. I've installed Xampp and it seems to be
working fine.
My problem is that to start the control panel I
have to open a terminal and type the command:
sudo
/opt/lampp/share/xampp-control-panel/xampp-control-panel
I've
tried to add this to the applications menu but without success. How
can I do this please?

Ubuntu
Hi,
I have been using wamp on an xp box and now have set up
ubuntu with the localhost server seeming to be going okay.
As
this is just a desktop graphical test server with no real public
hosting, I was hoping to find a control panel like in wamp where one
can stop/start php, apache, mysql, phpmyadmin and see logs etc.
I
have done some searches but so far can't see anything.
Am I
missing it, or maybe it does not exist.
Thanks
oz :-)

XAMPP has been around for more than 10 years – there is a huge community behind it. You can get involved by joining our Forums, adding yourself to the Mailing List, and liking us on Facebook, following our exploits on Twitter, or adding us to your Google+ circles. Contribute to XAMPP translation at translate.apachefriends.org. Apache Will Not Start Without The Configured Ports Free. The web server is always running “80” ports. XAMPP is a collection of many other software such as Apache, mysql, php, perl, phpMyAdmin and FTP Server etc. So you can run only XAMPP then run many other features. You can try as same time run Skype and XAMPP. Then conflict web ports 80. I don't think it will give you any more info, but have you checked the 'Netstat' window of XAMPP? (It's on the right side in the control panel and might give you some more information).

XAMPP is an easy to install Apache distribution for Windows, Mac OS X, Linux and Solaris. The package includes the Apache web server, MySQL, PHP, Perl, a FTP server and phpMyAdmin.

XAMPP has been designed to be the easiest way to install and run a development server. There are numerous other WAMP packages available, but XAMPP is one of the most complete on offer. In addition to Apache, MySQL, and PHP, XAMPP includes other really useful tools such as the phpMyAdmin database administration tool, FileZilla FTP server, Mercury mail server, Perl programming language, and JSP server Tomcat.

In the XAMPP control panel you can configure the above services with ease. XAMPP can also install an administration site as the home page of the server. From which you can undertake all manner of administrative tasks, such as checking the server status and security, launch tools like phpMyAdmin and Webalizer analytics. You can also view PHP demos which can be of use for those developers who are just starting out.

Overall, XAMPP is a great tool for anyone looking to get a full development server up and running within quick time constraints. The only issue that we can see, is that because it is so easy to setup, it doesn't have the security features for this to be used as a production server. However, if you really need to make the server Web accessible, then you can do so, albeit against the advice of the Apache Friends development team.
